Big Red is a basic five reel slot with plenty of Aussie flavours set in the land of dingoes and saltwater crocodiles. With opportunities to win big and a tasty looking RTP, this is a great slot to take for a walkabout.
Grab a knife worthy of the name, go down under, and head into the bush with Big Red. In the outback, you’ll find dingoes, bush pigs, and saltwater crocs all mixed up with the usual King to Nine symbols (no aces in this game).
The outback setting is nicely represented with the many animals and the background of Australian red dust desert.
If you can’t afford a holiday to Oz you could always give this a go instead.
The setting is fun, and the visuals are nicely produced. The bog-standard King to Nine symbols feel very out of place, but on the whole, the art is easy on the eyes and well animated.
The sound design is simplistic. No background music, and only the barest of sounds for wins and reel spins. It would have been nice to have something a little more produced in this department, but it is better to have no music than terrible music.
The gameplay is unimaginative, only offering the tried and tested push button spin reel play of a five reel slot machine. It comes with a gamble feature where you can play double or nothing by betting on the colour of the next card off the top of a deck of cards, or quadruple or nothing by betting on the suit.
The bonuses are pretty basic stuff (see below for details).
Overall, like the visuals, it doesn’t impress but certainly doesn’t do anything too wrong. A solid average all round.
Big Red has a tree which plays as a Scatter symbol paying from twice your bet per spin, if two show up running left to right, all the way up to fifty times your bet if you hit one on all five reels.
There is also a Wild symbol, the big red kangaroo of the title. This substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter.
The Wild symbol also triggers a free spin if it is a part of a winning combination. You get 5 free spins for each Wild symbol in each winning combination.
During the free spins the Scatter symbol will pay out the same amount as the line which won you the free spins. For example, if you trigger the spins with a Jack and two Wilds (worth 10 times your bet per line) and hit two trees on the first spin, those trees win you 20 times your bet per line total.
Free Spins can be stacked, so hitting more lines with a Wild during the free spins will add another five spins to your total.
The game has medium to high variance generated by the rareness of the profitable free spin rounds and the fact that it only has five winlines. This works pretty well with some high-variance strategies.
The real draw of this slot though is its return to player of 97.04% which is nicely above the industry standard of around 96%.
The bet sizes on the site we tested ranged from €/£/$0.01 per spin if you play just one line up to a maximum bet of €/£/$5.00 per spin with all five lines at the maximum bet.
It might not be the most attractive of slots, or come with the most features, but Big Red is solidly built and has a decent RTP and volatility in its favour.
Besides, it is hard not to fall for the adorable dingoes.
